Suspended above, this lighting sculpture explores the boundary between terrestrial and celestial realms. Inspired by growth and cosmic wonder, “Space Bloom” combines the elegance of a flower with the mystery of a UFO. Constructed with various materials, the vibrant yellow core shines through four concentric layers. Each layer emits light, creating a dynamic interplay with the church’s backdrop. The piece is suspended by a steel cable, allowing for vertical movement. This work, characteristic of Ole Ukena’s playful style, oscillates between abstraction and figuration. As it moves, viewers experience different perspectives, from afar and up close, altering the perception of the intricate forms, which may suggest angels, faces, or other shapes. This participatory element invites personal engagement and imaginative exploration. “Space Bloom” was conceived during the “Church of Now” exhibition at Berlin Art Week. The exhibition showcased Ukena’s extensive body of work, including pieces with reflective materials and embroidery, as well as watercolors. The event was a collaborative experience, inviting artists and the public to explore the power of community and contemporary interpretations of traditional spaces.
